- facts: The client was a career military officer that was being investigated by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for allegedly molesting his step-daughter. The step-daughter made these allegations years after they supposedly occurred. After receiving a letter from his step-daughter the client was contacted by detectives from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and asked to come to the station. He arrived at the station and cooperated with law enforcement. Everyone would like to believe that a statement offered to the police is going to end up on the officer's report the same way it came from the suspect's mouth. Unfortunately, many law enforcement officers have pre-conceived notions about the guilt of a suspect before they take his/her statement. As a cosequence, the suspect's statement in the police report is a slanted version of what the suspect actually stated.
- defense: In this case, the client came to our office shortly after leaving the sheriff's station. We investigated the case and contacted the detectives. During our investigation of the allegations we became aware of the step-daughter's "my space" account on the web. It detailed a lot of behaivor that called her story into question.
- results: A few months after the investigation started law enforcement decided to drop the investigation.
